Tom Nguyen, a 51 year old storeman presents with a 7 week history of moderately severe central lower back pain limiting his capacity to work and undertake sporting activities such as tennis and lawn bowls. He cannot recall a particular precipitating event but recalls limited periods of back discomfort over the years. It is aggravated by physical activity especially lifting and long car trips.
