Shirley is 54 years old and has had Type 2 diabetes for the last 10 years. Diabetes was diagnosed when she had a gynaecological procedure for menorrhagia. Her periods ceased about 6 months later. She had been managed on a diabetic diet for 6 years but when blood glucose control deteriorated she was prescribed glibenclamide. The dose has been gradually increased to 15mg a day. Her weight had increased by 12kg since diagnosis but has decreased slightly (0.8kg) since her last visit and is now 89kg, with a BMI of 31 kg/m2.
