Mrs. Leach arrives at your practice accompanied by her daughter who tells you her mother has moved in to live with her following the recent death of her father. She requests that you give her a medical check. Mrs. Leach has no complaints except that she hasn’t been as lively since her husband died of a stroke at aged 83. She herself is now 74. She last saw a doctor 15 months ago and was told her BP was OK for her age. On questioning she denies any significant past or family history.

Examination reveals the following cardiovascular findings:

  • Supine blood pressure - 180/80
  • Ejection systolic murmur in the aortic area
  • Systolic bruit over the L. carotid
  • Diminished pulses in both legs
    (dorsalis pedis and post tibial arteries)

No other significant findings.
